Virtual Assistants, Joining Forces, and Reinventing Work At Home

On the Move… January 10, 2011

Filed under: Work at Home — Amber Whitener - Virtual IT Assistant @ 7:54 pm

This is the last post here at I have been working in my (very scarce) spare time to get us moved to

Where are we going?
We are moving to a new (and still being improved) location:

The Virtual Assistant Journal

Why are we going?
Even though isn’t the most obvious address for us to move to. πŸ™‚ The girls were so gracious as to agree to start blogging there (at my old personal blog) so that I may work more with my self-hosted site (on a regular basis) and not be bound by the limits of a blog.

Are we still going to continue writing about our work at home life?
Absolutely. In fact, now we will be able to incorporate even more interaction with you as we integrate Facebook and you’ll be able to connect to us on Facebook directly from there. Or at least we get to work more with the recommendations plug-ins and such.

What about all of the content that is already here? Will we still be able to get to it?

Isn’t it tacky to just duplicate the content have it in both places online?
Yes. So this is what we are going to do. While we are going to leave the posts up at this location, many will be changed to a type of excerpt with a link to the full article at We are doing this for the purpose of making sure that when people pull up a search result that has already been indexed, they won’t just get a message saying that this content doesn’t exist anymore.

We will leave this blog up and then when all of the’s links are indexed properly, we will have the option to delete this blog.

For those of you in the SEO business, this will make more sense. For everyone else just know that this process does take a long time when it is done correctly.

Wow, 2010 was a great year wasn’t it? In fact, it seems odd already talking about it in the past tense! Well, we three virtual assistants decided in December of 2009 that we would try writing together for a year. And so, we did! We plan on continuing our venture too, I’ll give you more details next week. For now though, I want to share this message we received from the people at letting us know how we did. And this is what it said…

The stats helper monkeys at mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

This Is My Last Monday Post Before 2011! December 27, 2010

Filed under: Work at Home — Amber Whitener - Virtual IT Assistant @ 6:13 pm

What a crazy year! Right?

It feels sort of surreal for me to have this year behind me.

With graduation and having both kids in school I have been fortunate to have a LOT of changes that lead me to have more time to manage for work and home life!

As with any change it has taken so much energy and dedication to make the right adjustments to get the benefits of that change.

2011 is the year that I will see even more of those benefits!

We have decided to go ahead and move our blog to my self-hosted WordPress site so that we will no longer be limited by the blog rules. πŸ™‚

I posted a how-to on importing and exporting WordPress blogs from one location to another.

The web new address is:

Winter storms and icy roads have been causing quite a slow down in traffic here in Indianapolis. It is definitely December and this is the time of year when everyone seems to do their own sort of hibernating. Don’t they?

I cannot believe that next Monday is the LAST MONDAY before Christmas!!! πŸ™‚ I will get back to continuing my part of the holiday wishes with you next week. However, this week I really needed to write about slow traffic. . . web site traffic that is.

31 Days of Wishes – I Wish for Less December 6, 2010

My wish is for less… or fewer, whichever word is grammatically appropriate. πŸ™‚

I could list a whole stack of things I would love to have more of: time, vacation, friends, money, and so on. Isn’t it nice to think about what you would wish to get less of? We are born conditioned to want more and more and more. And yet many of us all realize at some point that more really isn’t what we want at all.

What we really want is: enough.

Over the weekend, I started to realize that wishing for more time is just a waste of time. So I refocused my wishes to something that actually would give me more time.

I wish for:

  • less wasted time on thoughts or memories that I can do absolutely nothing about but still somehow manage get me down a bit
  • fewer times that I get so stressed out and tell my kids…” just a minute” then realize 20 minutes later I left them hanging just so I could… you know… “just get this done really quick!” :{ Yeah, I did that too much this year.
  • fewer detours
  • fewer illnesses
  • less depressing junk (wish I could use another word there) on tv or in my reading materials
  • less junk food… (This is the most difficult time of the year to with for that isn’t it?!

Most of all I wish for less stress. Maybe that means I need to wish for fewer moments to occur in which I allow things to pile up and come crashing down. Maybe it means that I need to wish for less impatience when things don’t go perfectly.

β˜† Happy Holidays β˜† with less of what you don’t need. πŸ˜‰

SEO is Changing November 29, 2010

Filed under: Learning By Example,Web and Blog Site Tips — Amber Whitener - Virtual IT Assistant @ 10:13 am

SEO is changing. Google is changing. Bing is… well, it’s still trying to figure out what it means to be a “decision engine”. I thought their commercials were sort of funny, but seriously… decision engine? I’d rather make my own decisions thank you very much. πŸ˜€

With that being said there are some rules for search engine optimization that will NOT change. My post on this week:Β  4 SEO Rules that Are Here to Stay

In case you are just now joining us, my website: is being overhauled. I’ve done some things like change the theme and make it a little prettier. I fixed my header to include my image again πŸ™‚ and I am going to make better use of that extra white space in the top section so no worries.

Today I have posted about something a little more technical… and a little more VITAL to the success or failure of my website: getting found.

To make sure my website is properly indexed by search engines, I must first make sure that my site is following the basic SEO rules that aren’t changing anytime soon.

So go, read, learn from my mistakes, and have a great week! πŸ˜‰
