15 Easy Free DoFollow Backlinks to Your Website October 18, 2010

Remember from the “Website Backlink Popularity Tools” post: “Backlinks are incoming links to a website, web page, or blog post.” And just so you know, I use the words linkback and backlink interchangeably. 🙂 Also please note that these links will help websites or businesses that are still in the startup phase. I don’t think any of these links have a higher Google Pagerank than 2 or 3. ** This means that creating backlinks from these resources are worthless to a site that already has a pagerank of 4 or higher. **

These next profiles may be a little less practical for brand new businesses, but you should still know that they are available to anyone.

12. Act.ly Twitter petitions at act.ly include your web address that you use in your twitter profile. I created one about cybercrime awareness a long time ago: http://act.ly/uo. When you stop by, you should sign it! It’s been awhile, but all the info is still very relevant.

14. Google Knowledge Profiles (called Knols): If you have a knol, or have some good content to start a knoll, you should definitely link back to your business site where appropriate. (Only create one or two links. That should be sufficient.) Wiki is Tricky! July 12, 2010

Wikipedia is “a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 15 million articles (over 3.3 million in English) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site.”

What Wiki Is:

Too many entrepreneurs don’t understand the beauty of this particular information system. This website was created for us and is constantly being updated by us to share accurate information. You might even call it a “living” encyclopedia. All information that is edited there is to be referenced with verifiable sources and must meet Wiki’s high quality standards. To leverage the value of Wikipedia means contributing well researched information to it’s already vast library. Wikipedia can be a tool to prove that you are an expert on your topic or in your field of business. Sharing information and having others verify the accuracy of the information is a great way to show your expertise. They keep tabs on who has made what edits, and believe me when I tell you that there will be a wiki administrator who will either undo any information without a good source or delete the wiki page altogether if the it isn’t deemed “notable” enough. Of course, when you accurately and holistically contribute a good article, you should blog about it and be proud of sharing your piece of wisdom with whole world. 😉

May I use myself as an example? You all know that I am a virtual IT assistant right? But what does that mean? A little under a year ago you wouldn’t have found any information if you looked up “IT assistant” on Wikipedia. I am proud to say that I contributed the IT_assistant page. When an employer puts out a classified ad for an IT assistant, you can find out what the skill requirements are for an IT assistant’s position. Even if you have never worked under that title, you may have experience to fit that job well.

There are many of us “gurus” who have been quoted here and interviewed there, but that doesn’t make us wiki material. Maybe you have worked extensively in our chosen field. You might have a successful business or single handedly spun yourself an extensive social network and have become quite popular. You may have written articles for popular websites like Mashable.com or Monster.com, but you don’t have recognition on Wiki. Not just anyone can go there (or hire someone else go there) and post up a wiki page about how fantastically interesting you are. Until you are interviewed for your expertise on CNN or Time magazine wants to put you on its cover, you probably don’t belong in the encyclopedia. (Sorry, but it’s true.)

There are dozens of wiki articles deleted everyday because so many newbies want to sign up and use it as some kind of social media tool that grants them an opportunity to market themselves, create backlinks to their blogs, or to just get their name out there. It just is not what Wiki is for. I mean, it is social, but its not about networking its about information.

Stop Selling Short

Wiki is not the place to validate or establish yourself; the quality of your work will do that for you. Maybe someday you’ll have your place on Wiki, but for now, let’s use it for what it’s good for: information.

 

Twitter: Some Get It, Some Don’t February 26, 2010

This is going to be short and sweet today, after all, it’s Friday.  After reading through Facebook updates today, I realized there are those who still don’t get Twitter.  Twitter came easy to me.  As a matter a fact, I love Twitter!  When I’m feeling overwhelmed, need a break or simply having a bad day – I visit Twitter.  I call it “Twitter Breaks”.  Just today, first thing this morning, I logged in and there was a DM waiting on me to respond to that said “Random question. What color is your hair now?” from a very dear friend of mine.  I shared some information (blog post/articles) that I thought would be of value to others all while receiving some help with email issues.

Being on Twitter is like being part of a community.  You have to do your part.  Meaning, although, sharing valuable information is great and does its part in helping build your followers…you have to engage in conversation as well.  I always tell my clients that I will help deliver the content to their Social Media sites, but I will not speak or tweet for them.  It’s very important for each individual or business to have its own voice.

Along with being a huge resource, Twitter is without a doubt, the best way to share and discover what is happening right now in real time.  It’s not a difficult tool to use.  Anyone can pick it up.  What really matters is how it impacts your daily schedule.

Social Media Minute: Bringing it All Together February 12, 2010

When you use social media networking to build a business, your marketing efforts are about relationships. By using social media, you are trying to be everywhere your audience is, but you are also trying to make real connections with real people. It all may seem like a new way to connect, but it’s based on the old-style neighbor relationships we’ve been relying on for years.

Consider a harvest time. When the crop is ready, people rely on the relationships they have with families and friends and their willingness to lend a helping hand to finish the work no one could do on their own. People connect. Then they help each other out, and increase financial stability and potential for themselves and others.    

If you think about your social media interactions in the same way, then you’ll naturally understand three of the most important keys to making it work.

  1. Make sure what you’re offering is useful to those interested in your product/service. You can do this by offering links to other blogs and websites you find useful. It is important to be honest about your product and offer content and updates that will benefit your customer and make potential customers want to know more about you.
  2. Lend a helping hand, by helping people get started themselves. Promoting others will be one of the most rewarding ways you can build your own success. When you know someone else is trying to get the hang of social media marketing, let them know what sites or articles you found useful. Connect them with opportunities and take a moment to answer questions. The advantage of social media marketing is that, once you get the hang of it, you have a quick easy way to offer help and pay it forward.
  3.  Don’t forget to keep connected. You can join social networking sites, but if you don’t actively participate you will be missing the benefit. It is important to update and network on a regular basis. If the only time a neighbor showed up was at harvest, you might not think they were much of a friend.           

 Social media marketing, when done right, can have a significant impact on your brand awareness & product popularity.

 

Social Media: Starting Out Right January 8, 2010

Using Social Media for your business can be a great marketing tool, when used effectively and correctly.  That’s right – correctly!  But who makes up the rules?  Who says what works for one business is the “correct” way and will work for all businesses? 

Every business, just as every person, has its own style.  I love to share Social Media tips. I love to share uplifting words and be a positive influence. I love sharing quirky moments during my day or funny things my kids do or say on the social sites.  Some “experts” say this isn’t the proper way to use social media.  But, I say, use social media in the way that will benefit you and your business the most. 

Does it work for me?  Well, my favorite thing to hear from potential clients is “ I like your style!”, and I hear this regularly. To me that’s starting out right.

  I personally don’t want to follow or befriend someone that’s ALL business.  I believe I was put on this earth to have fun and make a little noise.  I’m not saying go break all the social media rules, but have some fun with your social networking platforms.  

Here’s some tips:

–          Start out slow.

–          Join the sites and find a few friends or people to follow  – watch how they interact with others.

–          Build your followers, friends and fans organically over time.

–          Find articles, blogs and helpful resources and post links to them for your follower’s benefit.

–          Be yourself and genuine – it shows!

Remember that what works for one business with Social Media doesn’t work for another.  If Social Media is working for you then you are doing it correctly. 

One of my favorite quotes about Social Media came from Mari Smith  and it’s so true. “Be consistent. Be patient. Be ready.”

Here’s what I’m saying: Establish an online presence, be respectful of others, provide great content and have fun.   Now that you have a few tips for starting out – Go get ‘em!
